Weekend Shoutouts

Happy June! The following are a few of the things to do in and around Shaw this weekend:

1. 14th and U Farmers Market on Saturday – Go get some fresh veggies and homemade goodness at the 14th and U Farmers Market from 10am to 2pm at 14th and U Streets, NW. I hear strawberries will be abundant… Throw in some whipped cream and a shortcake or a biscuit and you have a great summer dessert.

2. Breakfast (or Lunch or Dinner or Just a Smoothie) at Queen of Sheba – deliciously support this great small business. Queen of Sheba is located at 1503 9th Street (at the corner of 9th and P Streets).

3. Play a Game of Horse Shoes at the Kennedy Recreation Center – located in central Shaw and under the shade of large trees, the rec center’s horse shoe pits make for a fun and casual way to spend an afternoon.

4. Check Your Neighborhood-Oriented Resolutions – it’s the half-way point of the year—How are you doing on your neighborhood-enhancing resolutions? It's never too late to play catchup!!

5. Shaw’s Regular Exciting Options - Shaw always offers you weekend fun, including these regular options: the Liberation Dance Party at DC9, the shows at 9:30 Club, Black Cat, Arena Stage, and Studio Theater, the cultural offerings of the Warehouse Arts Complex, Project 4 Gallery, the Ninth Street Gallery, and the Long View Gallery, and the chance to get your freak on and knock back some drinks at places like Avenue, Be Bar, and Old Dominion Brewhouse.

Hey Shaw Rez - Quick unrelated question please - how is the progress on the Exchange? I haven't been by for a while....

Anon @ 9:54 - The Exchange (rehab and addition to a row of historic buildings at 9th and N Streets, NW, that will bring additional residences and retail across the street from the Convention Center) appears to be going very well. Last I checked it out, the brick on the new addition in the back was going up, and I saw some of the recently delivered new windows. Rumor is that The Exchange may be ready this fall!

I don't think Douglas Development has publicly announced if the residential will be condo or aprtment yet. Retail tenants won't be signed on until building completion, but a ground floor cafe with outdoor is anticipated.

Yes... Constructions will be completed in October... then build out of retail spaces (one leases are signed) will take through the Spring of 2008. They are doing an excellent job over there...

That's great news! Thanks very much for the updates....I think this development will be a HUGE benefit to all the progress we're already seeing on 9th.....

as reported by DCist, the following event is also going on this weekend:

ArtOutlet presents its first ever Flash animation film festival, called Flick, at Warehouse. Tim Bracken opens the event with an alt-country set at 7 p.m., with screenings from selected artists beginning at 8. $5 suggested donation, also Saturday

Great blog, just one quick comment: the half-way point of the year is the end of June (when a fill six months have passed), not the beginning. And it's always a good time to check up on the neighborhood improvement-related resolutions!

JD - oops. Thanks and good call re: the half of a year... haha. Dates, numbers, and math generally have never been my forte, but if I'd put any thought into it I would've realized this error!

Hey ShawRez, I just had an idea inspired by your suggestion to think about neighborhood improvements! Could you possibly do a post with the addresses of the appropriate people to contact to hold government accountable regarding the Shiloh properties? Perhaps with a sample letter.... I think that keeping the issue alive on blogs is important, and you have done an amazing job, by the way!! Just one idea to get a maximum of people holding our elected officials' feet to the fire...

Went to Queen of Sheba for dinner last night for the first time. We felt we really needed to support this neighborhood restaurant given their ordeal getting a liquor license and always looking for good Ethiopian food. Queen of Sheba exceeded our expectations. The food is excellent with large portions and reasonable prices, the wait staff extremely attentive. We had a vegetarian combo along with Awaze beef tibs and Lamb Tibs. If you like Ethiopian food like we do, do yourself a favor and check out Queen of Sheba. We found it on par with Etete and definitely better than Dukem or Lalabela. We Also, get yourself a smoothie...Yum! To say the least, we will be back. Just waiting for a nice cold Harar beer to appear on the menu..Hope,Hope.
