Two new weekend farmer’s market options are going to be just a stone’s throw from our front stoops here in Shaw. As my garden still has a good month or so to go before giving me any fresh produce, these options are very exciting:
The 14 & U Farmers' Market opens this Saturday, June 2nd and will run through November 17th. It will be held Saturdays from 10am-2pm on the sidewalk plaza outside the Reeves Center (at the northwest corner of 14th and U Streets, NW).
The Bloomingdale Farmers' Market will open on Sunday, June 17th and will run through November 18th. It will be held Sundays from 10am to 2pm at 1st and R Streets, NW.
Both markets are producer only, which means that they only allow producers who sell what they themselves grow, raise or bake. They are also local only, which means that all producers come from the Chesapeake Bay watershed: from Pennsylavania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware or DC. This translates into local, seasonal and fresh goodness.
Both markets work with the Women, Infants and Children (“WIC”) clinics to ensure that recipients know about the WIC Farmers Market vouchers that they get to buy fresh fruits and veggies. Also, both support and donate fresh food to soup kitchens: 14 & U works with Martha's Table and Bloomingdale with Bread for the City.

Question remains on what Shaw seniors and the less ambulatory will do for the 18 months the O Street Market Giant is under construction leaving a void to be filled by Whole Foods, the 5th & K Safeway . . .
Bigger question remains as to when and if the O street market project will actually happen...
