Restaurants and Coffee Shops

1905 (1905 Ninth Street, NW, 202.332.1905) – Tucked away on the second floor in the middle of the 1900 block of Ninth Street, 1905 is a cozy, warm, and sexy spot unlike any other in Shaw. It’s a great place for a date, a drink before a show, or just to enjoy some delicious food in a great atmosphere.

Azi’s Café (1336 Ninth Street, NW, 202.232.0001) – A great coffee shop serving a variety of hot and cold coffee drinks, breakfast and lunch items. The interior is bright and warm with large windows, and the outdoor patio is a wonderful place to people watch and greet neighbors.

Beau Thai (1700 New Jersey Avenue, NW, 202.536.5636) – Beau Thai features authentic, fresh, and delicious Thai food in a beautiful setting.  Dine in, delivery or carryout, lunch and dinner, seven days a week.

Chatman’s D’Vine Bakery and Café (1239 Ninth Street, NW, 202-290-3681) – Selling an array of delicious baked goods and lunch items, the Washington Post celebrates Chatman’s for "The Best Sweet Potato Pie We've Ever Tasted."

Corduroy (1122 Ninth Street, NW, 202.589.0699) – A true culinary gem located directly across from the convention center, James Beard Award Winning Chef Tom Powers has established his home base of deliciousness in Shaw. The dining room is sophisticated, and quiet, perfect for a special occasion meal. The upstairs bar features happy hour specials in a cozy, cool setting.

Dickson Wine Bar (903 U Street, NW, 202.332.1779) – The very vertical Dickson Wine Bar boasts a super chic atmosphere unlike any other in Washington. Its intriguing wine menu features all organic or biodynamic, its cocktails are inventive, and its food is a treat.

First Cup Café (900 M Street, NW, 202.289.4601) - A great subterranean coffee shop at the corner of Ninth and M, right across from the convention center.  Their breakfast and lunch treats from the grill are very tasty.

Nellie’s Sports Bar (900 U Street, NW, 202.332.6355) - Nellie’s is a great LGBT focused sports bar with a fantastic roof deck, a variety of interesting activities (from drag brunch to trivia night), and a consistently great crowd.

Red Toque Café (1701 Sixth Street, NW, 202.588.5516)

Rogue 24 (Blagden Alley, behind 1234 Ninth Street, NW) – James Beard Award winning Chef R.J. Cooper redefined fine dining with this this small, edgy restaurant tucked away in Blagden Alley. The crown jewel of the place is its a twenty four course tasting menu with pairings.

Seasonal Pantry (1314 1/2 Ninth Street, NW) – a tribute to roadside farm stands and old-fashioned markets, Seasonal Pantry is a neighborhood store offering all sorts of house-made small-batch products, specialty foods, and local and imported goods. Think of it as a cross between an old-world butcher, an Italian pasta shop, and a family grocery. 

SUNdeVICH (Naylor Court, behind 1314 Ninth Street, NW) – Gourmet sandwich shop from the folks behind the popular Seasonal Pantry.

Long View Gallery (1234 Ninth Street, NW, 202.232.4788) – In 2009, Long View moved into a renovated former Plymouth and DeSoto showroom across from the convention center. The massive new space is a gorgeous backdrop for the gallery’s constantly rotating collections and is a totally unique, memorable and edgy venue available for rent as an events space.

Wagtime Pet Spa, Daycare and Boutique (1232 Ninth Street, NW, 202.789.0870) - Wagtime makes you want to own a dog just so you can have an excuse to go inside.  In their state of the art facility, Wagtime offers dog boarding  and daycare (dogs can even get some outside time on a doggie roof deck!), a fantastic dog boutique full of all sorts of practical and not-so-practical items, and grooming.

All Souls (725 T Street, NW) - All Souls will be a tavern featuring a variety of craft (and mainstream) beers and great wine.  


The Brixton (901 U Street, NW) - From the Hilton Brothers of Marvin fame, this English-style pub with a roof deck will bring life to the long vacant building at the northwest corner of Ninth and U.

The Independent (715  Florida Avenue, NW) - Coffee house from the Hilton Brothers.

Off Road Indoor Cycling (905-907 U St, NW) – A dedicated indoor cycling studio expected to open by June 2012.

Satellite Pizza (2047 9th St, NW) - Pizzeria from the Hilton Brothers.

Velour (1124 Ninth Street, NW) - From chef Tom Power of Corduroy (next door at 1122 Ninth), Velour will be a casual eatery with a minimalist look of exposed brick walls, concrete floors, wood and steel. The menu price point will be under $20. Velour should open by May 2012.

To-Be-Named Restaurant (903-905 N Street, NW) - Frederik De Pue Executive, who is Chef/Owner of 42° Catering and affiliated with Smith Commons on H Street, NE, has leased the building. He intends to open a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.
