Grocery Funk

The lack of grocery options seems to be the biggest complaint of urbanites. With Giant at 9th and O (for now . . .) and Whole Foods at 14th and P, we're not exactly starved for grocery options. Nonetheless, I am envious of Carboro, North Carolina and its Weaver Street Market. Weaver Street Market is a cooperative grocery store that promotes "environmental protection, social equity and economic prosperity." Not only is it a source for healthy eating, it is also a source of community pride, a gathering spot and a symbol of the diverse community surrounding it. Such a place does not open overnight, as demonstrated by our neighbors to the east who have been working on the idea for several years already. Wouldn't it be great to have such a place in Shaw?

So glad you found Weaver Street! I grew up with my hippie parents dragging me to this and other food co-ops in the Chapel Hill area, and they really are an amazing community resource. I'll probably head over there in the next few days while I'm back home in NC.

Let me know when I can join the Shaw co-op petition!

Indeed I love Weaver Street--it's so much more than just a grocery store!

I will let you know about the Shaw co-op if you will do the same if you hear about it first!
