CityMarket at O Groundbreaking September 1

CityMarket at O, which is probably the most anticipated project in Shaw, will celebrate its groundbreaking on September 1, 2010 from 3 to 5 p.m.  The  CCCA blog has an image of the beautiful invitation for the event.

Great news! Anyone heard anything about the Convention Center hotel groundbreaking? I keep hearing sometime this fall, but that's a big window. I hope they get started soon.

Besides being a good photo op for the mayor right before the primary does any real construction begin at City Market at O subsequent to the groundbreaking? Not to sound negative, it's very exciting news if it's truly a groundbreaking...just a little cynical of elected officials w/ hard hats and shovels getting their picture taken with nothing happening afterward...

I don't think hardly anything can happen until after the holidays, per terms of the contract with Giant. From what I recall, major work on the project requires that the Giant be closed and contractually the Giant will not close between Sept. and Xmas. Apparently that is when the Giant does most of it's business for the year.

Given what seem to be typical construction project timeline slippage, I'm putting my money on about St. Patrick's Day 2011, for when the real work begins.

They say they will actually work on preserving the old market structure first which they can probably do whole the giant is open...
