Please Come to Queen of Sheba Restaurant ABC Protest Hearing, 09/06/07, 9:30 AM
At long last, the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board will meet on Thursday, September 6, 2007, at 9:30 AM at 941 North Capitol Street, NE, Suite 7200 (Metro: Red Line, Union Station) for the Protest Hearing that will determine whether Queen of Sheba Restaurant, 1503 9th Street, NW, will be granted a license to serve alcohol. The restaurant opened in February of 2006 and has been struggling to survive without a liquor license, since 60% of an average restaurant's sales come from sales of alcohol. (Vegetate Restaurant and Lounge, the other restaurant that had been previously prevented from receiving a liquor license, got their license in March when the ABC Board dismissed the protests of Shiloh Baptist Church and associated groups.)
While Shiloh itself was dismissed as a protestant by the ABC Board, two groups associated with Shiloh continue to attempt to prevent this neighborhood friendly, reasonably priced, family owned and operated establishment from being part of our revitalizing neighborhood.
If you would like to demonstrate your support for this establishment, and by extension, your support for restaurants along 9th Street, you can come to the hearing and stand up and be counted. While you will not be able to testify, you will be able to be acknowledged as being present in support of the applicant at the beginning of Queen of Sheba's attorney's presentation of the case. You should be able to leave by 10:30 AM so you can get to work.
It is important that the ABC Board see that neighborhood residents support Queen of Sheba's application, since Shiloh-backed opponents have bussed in their crowd for hearings in the past.

Any update on the hearing?
left the hearing at the noon break, so far so good. the abra investigator reported that QoS is clean & well run etc...their lawyer is doing a good job, Ray testified and made it clear what kind of neighbor shiloh is with all the vacant property, I got accused of "editorializing" because i gave my affilliation after my name (mvsna)...the protestants were basicly asking waste of time questions & some board members seemed a bit exasperated. id say we got about 10ish people to show. shiloh did not turn out en masse as i have seen in previous hearings. it was about even. btw it is NOT too late to submit letters for the record. fax em in!
Mr. Johnson feigning illness, halting the meeting and delaying it again until September 22 is an outrage -- considering that his drama was to allow those mostly Shiloh members at this meeting to skedaddle over to the courtroom to keep Reverend Smith from getting the old boot. Friday Post had a small blurb in the Metro section:
More than 200 members of Shiloh Baptist Church turned up in D.C. Superior Court yesterday for the first hearing in the contentious battle between church leaders and a group of unhappy church members who want the church's pastor removed.
Sixty members, most of them supporters of the Rev. Wallace Charles Smith's, jammed the small courtroom, and the remainder thronged the halls as Judge Bruce D. Beaudin told the nine assembled attorneys that he would reconvene next week on the dissident church members' motion that Smith be removed from the pulpit, after he had time to read the voluminous paperwork filed in the case.
In August, 138 church members voted to remove Smith from office, saying he had mismanaged the church and its finances. But other church members have rallied around Smith. They predicted a big showing at next week's hearing.
