Development Timelines: Lower 9th

For anyone not keeping track, here's a rundown of some of the major reported timelines regarding the ever-changing face of lower 9th Street:

+ New Convention Center Hotel (discussed here) – Construction begins 2009, delivery in 2011
+ Corduroy Restaurant (discussed here)- Construction underway; opens February 2008
+ Flats at Blagden Alley (discussed here)– Construction begins Fall 2007; delivery in 2009
+ The Exchange (discussed here)– Construction underway, delivery in spring 2008
+ O Street Market (discussed here) – Construction begins 2008, completed by 2011
+ Carter Woodson Historic Site (discussed here) – delivery “by” 2016

There are several other developments and openings in various stages of the pipeline along this corridor--such as 1124 9th (being redeveloped as a ground floor retail condo with several residential condos above), Nima's restaurant (in the 1200 block, construction underway), and the building next to Nima's that's nearing completion on a major renovation into commercial spce--for which I have no information re: delivery dates but that are pushing forward. Accordingly, this stretch is set to see a dramatic transformation in the next 5 year period.

Great list! Plus, the old convention center site, when redeveloped, will have a big impact..

I had asked A. Padro a ways back about what the commercial space was to be just south of Nima's. He said it's going to be an architecture firm's office. This was the building that had the big blue tarp up for a while on the front.

Shaw Rez, I live at the Whitman and just noticed some new fencing up around what used to be a parking lot for the Mt. Vernon Square Apartments (between Whitman and west to 10th Street). Any idea of the reason for this? The fences just went up today. Thanks in advance for any insight!

and let's not forget Kelsey Gardens development!!

Anon @ 7:09 - Not sure about what's going on re: the fencing; I'll keep an ear out.

I plan a timeline rundown for 7th Street soon, Anon @ 8:52, and will be sure to include Kelsey Gardens (announced delivery, 2010).

ML - Thanks for the info re: the architecture firm! That'll be an exciting addition to the professional makeup of our area!

The loose cannon that is the Whitman Condo blogger apparently isn't happy about the prospect of being woken up by the sounds of construction. http://thewhitmandc.blogspot.com/

Which is kinda ironic, you know, considering that the building this person resides in is quite large and was recently constructed. What's good for the goose...

Shaw Rez, do you know what's up with Broadcast Center One? I thought that was supposed to begin construction this fall.....?

@ "Mr. 14th & U"

It looks like another Whitman RULE BREAKER has found his way onto a local blog, and is continuing a campaign of smears against the Whitman blogger, and all the decent people who live at the Whitman who support the Whitman Watcher's efforts to combat smoking on the roof, illegal parking and disruptive construction.

Who are you, the driver of the black Cadillac? The smoking lifeguard? Or the female Asian smoker, in disguise?

As a resident of the Whitman, I feel I have to stick up for the "rest of us." To be blunt, we think the Whitman blogger is ignorant. I refuse to read his/her blog as it is inflammatory, insensitive, and uninformed. I know I speak for many (if not all) Whitman residents when I say that we care about our neighborhood and want to see it grow. I hope that one bad blogger won't ruin the neighborhood's opinion of the whole building.

Amen to "So tired of WW"!

I, too, am a Whitman resident who's not at all fond of the extreme and inflamatory nature of the Whitman Watcher and his blog.

It's refreshing to see that there are indeed other fabulous bloggers here in Shaw that are interested in the positive developments that our occurring in our neighborhood.

Shaw Rez, I'm definitely a fan of yours!

Aw c'mon! between the name calling, paranoia, racism, imaginary friends and the multiple personality disorder, Whitman Watcher is the most entertaining blog in the neighborhood! Someone send her a carton of smokes!

Whoa Selma, check it out this morning! WW is one deranged lunatic. If I lived at the Whitman, I'd be more worried about having that blogger living under the same roof than the elevator vandal.

Mr. 14th and You,

Just because we live in a newly constructed building it means we don't have a right to be concerned about being woken up at 7AM on the weekends for the next four years?

Having that concern hardly means we don't want growth and progress for Shaw.

And while we wish the new hotel wasn't going to be a Marriott for a variety of reasons, we are mature enough to admit it will improve street life in the area.

And as far as we're concerned, your blog could stand a little injection of "loose cannon."

Zzz.
