Veranda Restaurant Coming to 11th and P

Prompted by a discussion in the comments to last week's post about progress on the Logan Row condominiums, I did a little digging for information about the restaurant coming to the southwest corner of 11th and P Streets. I learned that the owners of Mt. Pleasant's popular Heller's Bakery are opening a Mediterranean restaurant at 1100 P Street to be named Veranda (interim Veranda website viewable here). According to their website, they "hope to provide a pleasant place where all the neighbours will meet for a coffee, a mezze, a tapa, a beer or an ouzo." Sounds like it could be great!

Construction on the space is ongoing, albeit slowly. They have reportedly almost finished the plumbing, electrical, and mechanical work. After those components are complete, they will close the walls and place the equipment. A renewed liquor license application is posted on the exterior. The target opening date is May 1.

Awesome, thanks for the info!! Sounds like it could be a great neighborhood gathering place....

On another note, I just read in the Wash. Bus. Journal that a developer in Alexandria has scrapped a condo project in favor of a Klimpton (sp?) boutique hotel, complete with a wine bar, day spa, etc. . . . How about if Walnut Street follows suit with its Blagden Flats project?!? I know you've mentioned Klimpton before in your posts, Shawrez...

All for the arrival of more restaurants in the area, but tapas is so three-years ago...

what a nice addition and compliment to the neighborhood this will be. i've watched this progress. those windows are lovely and the yard is just about finished already. right at the bus stop at 11th and P st nw. great for Logan East, PSA 307 and our Blagden Alley neighbors. there use to be a couple doors south a plexiglass beer store where people paid their phone bills.

well, if heller's is opening there, i guess that means that it's less likely they'll be investing in bloomingdale. i thinking the dream of a bakery at 1st and rhode island is on the back-burner now.

Imgoph -- the Duni brothers of Heller's Bakery indicated that they wanted to finish the Veranda project at 11th & P NW before they dove into the bakery "annex" project in Bloomingdale at 1st, Rhode Island & T St NW.

Is 1100 P at the Southwestern corner? There's a commercial space with some permits posted in the window, but I don't think anything has happened there for over a year -- at least that I noticed walking by.

Rob-yep, that's the corner (the maroon building). I've seen workers there somewhat regularly recently. The Hellers people say that it's been tough to retain contractors for such a small job, which is, in part, holding things up.
