625 Rhode Island Avenue Development Underway

This weekend I noticed that work on the United House of Prayer's condominium development at 625 Rhode Island Avenue, NW is underway.  Notably, the site has been cleared of four row houses (which can be seen prior to demolition here) and fenced off.

According to Urban Turf, the project will include sixteen two and three-bedroom units, and half of the units will be affordable to households earning 60 to 80 percent of the area median income. The Reatig-designed development will have eleven parking spaces, open green space at ground level, a green roof, and a small rooftop deck

Here's a look at how things look now:

And here's a rendering of what's in store for the site:

The Development tab above has been updated to reflect the status of this project.

Susan Reatig is a disgusting person who has done nothing but trash our neighborhood witht the junk she puts up. Her last "trash of the neighborhood" is at 7th and M NW. In the Mt. Vernon Square Historical District she has torn down an old house that had sat on the north side of the street for over a hundred years with the dreadful trash that's almost finished. Of course with United House of Prayer (McCullough Constructon's help). Those wonderful, neighborhood conscience Christians.

She trashed the end of Ridge Street at the 4th Street end on the north side of the street. She trashed N Street towards the 5th Street side in Mt. Square also. She trashed the corner of 5th and O with the junk as well. Now she's heading north to 625 Rhode Island.

All of this trashing has been done with the help of United House of Prayer for All People, (7th and M NW and 7th and R NW). This is the same church that ruins the neighbhorhood every Memorial Day and has NEVER done one thing for the kids in the neighborhood in the 30 years I've lived her. Someone needs to stop this woman from trashing our neighborhood yet again.

So, I take it Spivak doesn't care for modern architecture and thinks everything should look like uniform Victorian and federal rowhouses. That's the only thing these medium-density projects (s)he labels "trash" seem to have in common.

Noted. And dismissed. Development is good, especially when it replaces blighted or vacant property. Density is good - it increases the housing supply (bringing prices down so that those of us not earning 7-figures can still afford to buy in the city) and puts more "eyes on the street" to deter crime. At least they're building here, not putting up a parking lot like the church at 3/M NW.

As for Spivak's apparent aversion to modern architecture - get over it. Not every building is going to look the same, nor should that be the case. There's plenty of room for the classical and the modern in our neighborhoods.

I agree with Spivak's post. I detest her designs. The one at 5th and O st. looks like a bad medical office building from the 80's.

Wow, that building is truly hideous.
