City Vista Safeway Amazes

Today is the official opening day of the new "urban lifestyle" Safeway in City Vista, at 5th and K Streets, Northwest. We decided to make a grocery run there this morning in anticipation of a cookout we're having this weekend. All I can say is "wow."

The store is well staffed, well stocked, well appointed, and well laid out. The free one-hour-underground parking is abundant and convenient, thereby making it our go-to store now for our weekly grocery runs (previously we drove to the Pentagon City Harris Teeter for such runs -- the O Street Market Giant, though less than a block away, is too frustrating of a grocery experience(with its long lines, uncleanliness, understaffing, and poor selection) to be the store of choice for our weekly runs). We took advantage of the store's nut bar, Starbucks, amazing deli with delicious prepared foods, abundant produce section, and friendly meat counter. Check out photos of the new store here or, better yet, shop there yourself soon!

Question for the mighty renewshaw: Do you know when Giant will close to begin the O Street Market renovation? I heard October...

For what it's worth, Giant is trying to keep some customers. I was there Saturday afternoon, and the store was clean, stocked, the employees were not only present, but were also pleasant and the lines weren't ridiculously long. They were even handing out samples. My faith was almost restored...until I got in line behind a crazy cat lady, who insisted on dividing her purchases up by category, and making three separate purchases, and had the check out woman repack her bags twice.

Now don't be getting down on the Ghetto Giant. Some of us carless folks don't have the luxury of deciding which fancy grocery store we'll go to this week, so I'm not looking forward to the store's closing.

I actually love shopping there. People are very friendly and it seems I never leave without having at least one helpful and entertaining conversation with one old lady or another.

I just went to the new safeway for the firsttime this weekend. I was very disappointed. It took me a bit over an hour to do my shopping and the extra 10 minutes after the free hour cost me $8. Also, the prices, as usual for a safeway, were a bit higher than harris teeter. Went to buy milk, and nearly all of the gallons of skim milk were either already expired, or were going to in 2 days.

The Harris Teeter in Admo has no time limit on the free parking, the prices are a bit lower, and I have never seen an expired dairy issue.

What began as a bang is now a bomb. This Safeway has horrible customer service, a terrible food selection, and the produce is old and stale. Bring a book because it will take you 20 minutes minimum to check out most days. I drive to the Harris Teeter in Adams Morgan now.
