Corduroy Opens and Delights

Acclaimed restaurant Corduroy quietly opened the doors to its new digs in Shaw this past weekend. I had the pleasure of being treated to an impromptu visit last night (except for last night and this coming weekend for Mothers' Day, they won't usually be open on Sundays) and was in heaven.

The restaurant looks awesome--there is modern caramel colored mill work throughout, and there are various alcoves that provide for neat intimate dining. The main dining area is on the first floor and features an open kitchen in the back (it's so cool to see the genius chef/owner, Tom Power, at work back there!). Upstairs is the bar and cocktail area, from which you can order off the full menu. I imagine this cocktail space will be quite the destination unto itself. Also upstairs are uber-cool bathrooms and two private dining areas.

Now on to the food. One word: delicious. Everyone at our table was basically licking each of their plates from start to finish. For starters, we all shared the "buffalo mozzarella porcupine" (too difficult to describe...) and loved it. We all also tried various other first courses, all of which were equally well received -- my beet salad was very tasty. For my main dish, I ordered the lamb with garlic creamed spinach. It was spectacular. Some at the table ordered the scallops entree and said it was fabulous; ditto re: the seared tuna over sushi rice. We couldn't not order desserts, and were likewise really pleased. The chocolate tart was divine, but my favorite was a pineapple tart of some sort (I was verging on a food coma at that point, so the details of the last dishes escape me... I just know the pineapple thing was life changing).

Also worth noting is that the service was impeccable. You can tell that the employees are like family, and everyone seemed to glow over their new home.

Anyway, all to say, I'm thrilled that Corduroy has relocated to Shaw. It is a special restaurant and I wish it overwhelming success.

Cool - thanks for the review! I'll have to go there (especially since it's a bit closer to me than I thought - I was thinking it was going to be further up 9th Street, deeper into Shaw). I never made it there when it was in its old location, despite always meaning to.
