Slum Historiqued

I noticed on my way home from work last night (at 12:30 a.m. . . . sigh) that the notorious sign/photo opp welcoming visitors to Shaw, "Slum Historique" has been re-painted with its complete original message. You may recall that at some point last year, the "slum historique" part of the sign was painted over.

Despite the fact that this blog's name originated from this sign, I was glad to see the message redacted last year and am disappointed to see it back. I think there's enough negative energy in the neighborhood as it is to convey the same to third parties -- be they friends visiting, neighbors, potential investors, politicians, or otherwise.

On a tangentially related subject, it appears that the owner of this property, Michael Sendar, has placed on it a new banner advertising it as for sale. Whereas the last banner indicated the property was zoned R-4, the new banner indicates that ground floor retail might be allowed.

I would love to open a pie/baked goods shop here. I am sure he will want a ton of money for rent and even more for renovations to make the place worth renting. oh well

i'm going to disagree. i'm excited to see the "slum historique" back. it had become part of shaw's story, good or bad. that building is a "landmark", though not a good one.

I've got to agree with imgoph. There's a warm place in my heart for Shaw both as it is, and as it was. That sign is a nice reminder of the checkered history of Shaw.

at very least we can all agree that it'll be a great day when this sign is removed completely by someone putting the properties back to beneficial use.

I'd rather see that than those $%^& Jack Evans signs that he plastered all over Shaw

oh goodie! the smelly whore cafe looked positively nekkid!

at long last...sendar has been stuck with a proper vacant property tax bill. @34k overall for the year.

That's great news Si...isn't it? Or is there yet another way to escape paying the tax bill?

Does the new For Sale sign somehow exempt Mr Sendar from payment?

And unrelated, what's happening with the mud pit across from this property at the southeast corner of 9th and Q??? Will they EVER build something there?

Bob C - Drew spoke with the owner of that lot at 9th and Q today. He apparently anticipates the foundations being poured soon and the project being complete (!!!) by the end of the year. There have been delays with the city, but it appears that resolution is either here or in sight.

rode by 9th & Q, Slum Historique is a white stripe yet again.

theoretically, an owner has a finite amount of time to sell a property before using up the exemption. since sendar's dump has been vacant for many years, i'd say hed wouldnt even close to qualify. thankfully the city has started to charge some of these rotting buildings that have skated for years.

Thanks for the update on the mudhole Shaw Rez - hopefully we'll see progress SOON!!!

And thanks Si for the update on Sendar's property (and all your hard work in general re: vacant properties)- hopefully the city's rhetoric will actually turn into action without allowing loopholes for another 20 years...

I had nothing to do with the repainting. I was out of the country at the time. Mr. Ray.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who likes this very special spot! I want it to continue looking just like it does but be repaired up to code and become a bookstore and coffee shop inside--pies and cakes welcome.

Walking by 9th and Q Sts. this afternoon, I noticed that the newly repainted le slum historique had been painted over again.
Wings Motors is gone, lot for sale at 9th and P.

Frankly tragic that the whole tableau wasn't somehow preserved. There's nothing like it, and never will be again.
