Vida Fitness Coming to 9th and K

Thanks to PQ Living for pointing me to this Washington Business Journal article. The WBJ reports that Vida Fitness is opening a gym in the Renaissance Hotel, which is just south of the Convention Center and Carnegie Library at 9th and K Streets, in mid-June. This will be Vida's third location and will likely compete for members with the Results, The Gym coming soon to City Vista.

I think this is an exciting development on our southern border. In addition to providing yet another convenience to Shaw and Mt. Vernon residents, Vida will add some vibrancy to the convention center area. Can you imagine what this stretch of 9th Street will look like in a few years once the new convention center hotel is built, the old convention center site is redeveloped, Mt. Vernon Place United Methodist Church development is completed, restaurants like Corduroy are open, the Flats at Blagden Alley built, etc. etc. etc.?!? Exciting.

Blagden Alley Flats? Is that yet another piss-poor construction project where people are going to make new buildings pretending to look like the old townhomes that are a dime a dozen in Shlogan? I hope not...I am really sick of everyone's attitude that modern homes are bad and that we need god awful looking historical recreation monstrosities...

fortunately for you, Historic Preservation is very into completely modern new construction in historic districts. They usually dont trust developers to successfully emulate styles of bygone eras (with the possible exception of 60's sovietish - jk, i get bitter). but then again, they blow with the wind. its up to the neighbors & ANC to pay attention.

Come on DC...I know we can do it!

Mediocre - I too love that design. I think the plans for the Old Convention center site are pretty architecturally progressive and might impress us all.

The original plans for Blagden Alley looked pretty cool, I think. Not uber-uber-modern, but not faux-historic. I think they'd add a lot to the streetscape.

On a semi-unrelated topic, I really like the design of the convention center. Though not perfect, it's a pretty neat building.
