First Look: Town Danceboutique

Whether or not you'll ever darken the door of Town Danceboutique, the first major Gay dance club to open in Washington decades that officially opened for business this past weekend, you should know that it is a real gem for the Shaw neighborhood. There's no other way to describe Town's interior or exterior aesthetics other than to say it's all really cool. Outside, the lighting and signage are subtle, sophisticated, and inviting, making the streetscape buzz with anticipation of what's inside. Once you're in, you will note that visually no detail was spared: curved walls, wood grains, projected images, neat lighting, and even interesting bathroom sinks define the huge multi-floored club. The bars are easily accessed on both floors, helping make even packed nights--like the opening this past Saturday--enjoyable. There's even a quiet(er) room with seating where you can escape the club's dance floors to hang out with friends without screaming at the top of your lungs.

Town will only be open 2 nights a week for now, Friday and Saturday. Friday nights will be open to 18-and-older crowds and will be known as "Downtown." Downtown will be an edgier, more aggressive party pumping out electropoprock beats. The first one is this weekend. Saturday night will be open to 21-and-older crowds and will be known as ''Uptown.'' It will be feature a classic dance party vibe a la Nation. The first floor will offer two drag shows each Friday and Saturday at 9:30 and 11 p.m.

Town is located at 2009 8th Street, NW (just north of Florida Avenue) in the building that housed Kili's Kafe, Lounge and Nightclub (read of Kili's demise here). On premise parking is available, and it's easily accessed from the nearby Green Line metro.

It was really neat to see this stretch of the neighborhood brimming with people on Saturday night waiting to get in Town. I think there's great synergy with Town and Shaw. I'm thrilled to see the investment that's been made to bring Town here, and I'm happy to welcome it to our awesome neighborhood.
