DC Government vs. 7th Street?

Here are reasons to hate the D.C. government this week.

1. As discussed yestereday, the hideous development proposal selection for Parcel 42.

2. The Post reports today that the Broadcast Center One project might not go through as planned thanks to our city council. Read the story here.

I am starting to lose it with these jokers!!! I thought this had all been settled!?! There is a lead article in the bus.journal about the radio one project and the hideous monstosity

you all see this?? DC GOV is flucking up so bad even ShawRez, our most positive nighborhood blogger, is PISSED.

honey dont forget how they continue to sit on parcel 40, and all of the blight surrounding the convention center.

Isn't Parcel 42 also tied to Radio One?

I recall that the requirement to build parcel 42 out as all affordable housing, was to offset market rate housing being built as part of the Radio One Project.

If Radio One goes back to being negotiating table will that affect parcel 42?

haha... noted, Si!

ML - interesting background if true; I wasn't aware the two were tied to one another.

the bus journal article touches on the connection between the two projects... I think jack should be worried about the next election...the tide of public opinion in this area has shifted dramatically in the last few years when it comed to jack..

not to mention the whole 31 million dollar money laundering scandal of the OTR....

the stealing from the student funds...

My recollection is the two projects were definitely tied together...NCRC gave up their claim on land Radio One wanted in exchange for a promise to build affordable housing at 7th and R...if Radio One doesn't go forward, seems like the whole thing should be re-assessed...any thoughts Alex P???

But how can it just now be coming to the Council (and Jack Evan's) attention what the deal is that's been worked out with Radio One? How can this be a SURPRISE? How many years have they been talking about this?

And how EXACTLY was Parcel 42 Partners selected?

This is all crap...

But please don't be getting jaded Shaw Rez!! We rely on you to stay positive in the face of all this political B.S.!!

Thanks for your efforts!! :-)

See the link above from the Wash Bus. Journal...makes me wonder if Radio One is still a viable option for this space...given the "challenging radio environment"...

No worries--I'm not, and won't become anytime soon, jaded. Shaw's going to continue to be an increasingly great place to live, play and work, and these projects aren't going to make or break us (athough they have/had potential to be great catalysts). I am frustrated at the council's way-way-late-in-the-game decision and in the Deputy Mayor's Office aesthetically-challenged selection.

I'm kicking myself for not mounting/helping mount a campaign of support for the Parcel 42 proposal I posted a picture of yesterday. I don't think OneDC was representing the best interests and desires of Shaw on this one, and their campaign probably had an impact on the selection.

i remember cathy hughes when she was first stsrting out. when i arrived in this neighborhood her friend Roberta ran the little convienient store in the basement of 1143 5th St. and cathy would be there often. this was when they were still at 4th and H NE. i'm certain something will be worked out.

Hey everyone,
Over on ANC2C02.com - I asked Kevin who we could yell at about this whole thing, as well as how we could get the answers to all of the questions out there. he says:

"I have a call in to Sean Madigan. I will try to post his comments and responses to these and my own questions. At this point, I don't think it is necessary for his office to be inundated with calls/requests, so please just wait a few days until I can get in touch with him. Like any development proposal, the Parcel 42 project will need to go before the Council for review and approval. At large Council Members as well as our own Councilmember are all up for re-election in the next cycle, so I imagine it will be in their best interests to listen to constituents on this issue and give direct and honest responses.

I just saw over on Kevin's site that Cary Silverman is running against Jack.... all i can say is, "HELL YEAH!!!" Consider my vote already cast for Cary!!!!

Anonymous said...

I'm all for a new candidate, and Cary seems like an awesome option (based on what i've read on the blogs, etc).... i emailed jack's office a while back with a simple question about the neighborhood, and no one ever responded.... guess he doesn't care about losing my vote!!

I watched the hearing on this yesterday, and I have to say it all seemed to make sense, even though it is a set back. Both sides seemed to believe they would be able to work something when it ended. It appeared Jack was fine to give them the land, except for the fact that so many residents across the District have been complaining about "land grabs" this year (especially in theMail), that he didn't think 7 council members would vote to give them the land. I am not clear on whether the original plan was to give RadioOne the land, or to give them a 99 year lease or a TIF, etc. But Jack kept asking them why a lease option that RadioOne had agree to up until earlier this week had suddenly become undoable. RadioOne said that in this real estate climate, their bankers said it was going to be difficult to do financing under those terms. Jack asked them to go back to their bankers, and ask them if more money would help them , etc. If not, they could ask the council to give away the land, but again, Jack didn't think they would get 7 votes. People on this blog seem to think Jack wasn't listening to constituents. However, Kwame and Jack clearly stated the problem with giving away land is the constituents - specifically that over the summer a large number or constituents from across the District made it clear they are against giving away District land to developers.

I believe the development will happen one way or another based on what I saw.

the problem with the land deal this past summer at the westend library was the insider dealing that was going on. funny how evans always blames the activists.

It's always convenient for these guys to make their announcements in the middle of the work day with little to no advance notice, so folks cannot speak to them or ask questions directly. The Mayor's official announcement, sent out the night before actually said "1:30am" ... That's helpful. Is Leroy writing the Mayor's press releases as well?

Shaw Rez doesn't go to ANC/ECCA meetings, that's why he usually stays so cool. Shaw Rez for ECCA Prez!

what are the chances the mayor and company change plans and go with the non-hideous option for parcel 42???

Anonymous said...

zero, the community gets rid of the old watha daniel bunker and it's replaced by something bigger and uglier across the street.

i'm really happy to live far away from it.

maybe MANNA and Bread for the City can tagteam and do a number on the corner of 7th and P NW

Is there anything we can do at this point to protest the decision? I remember looking at the online petition from ONEDC, and there were a ton of non-DC signatures.... It seems like this city is pushed around most of the time by non-tax paying citizens to the detriment of those of us who actually pay the freaking bills...

flip-flop Jack will support a land giveaway in the West End but holds up the redevelopment of the Howard Theatre.

Stealing a page from Kayne's Katrina book: Jack Evans doesn't care about Black history or Black businesses.
