Nellie's Sports Bar Opening Soon (For Real)

While Nellie's has become to 9th and U what Bodo's Bagels was to the Corner in Charlottesville for so long, it seems the long-promised sports bar is finally opening any day now! I peaked in last night, and it really looks awesome. Check out their snazzy new--soon to be updated with more content--website here. I've been unable to confirm an exact opening night, but rumors abound that a soft opening has already occurred. At last check, paper still covers all of the windows.

As reported back in January, Nellie's Sports Bar will be another awesome dining and nightlife destination in our neighborhood. Originally slated to open in fall 2006 (or possibly even before that), Nellie's will be a unique addition to D.C., to this stretch of the U Street Corridor and to Shaw. It holds itself out as a sports bar with a twist. It will feature a menu of "Small Plates and Big Baskets" (their words), featuring good bar food and lighter fair, numerous televisions, a patio on the side of the building facing U Street, and a roof deck. It promises an inclusive, fun atmosphere. I cant' wait to check it out.

More details on the opening will be posted as I learn them.

Haha, that's awesome. I went to the web site and was like "those two dude sports fans really seem to like each other..."

who cares? still a great addition to our neighborhood. And it's further indication of Shaw's transformation into the gayborhood. Like it or not, that status generally harbors widespread improvement of an area.

um, i dont think anyone was being critical, anonymous. but it is relevant to many people who would rather not hang out at a gay bar if they aren't gay. dont be so sensitive. sometimes the truth is simply offered as that and nothing else. (bebar is also a gay bar but attracts a pretty mixed crown, at least before 10pm).

My 2 cents: I think this place will be Shaw/Logan's answer to Adams Morgan's Duplex Diner: great food, great atmosphere, significant gay clientele but heterosexuals wouldn't hesitate to go there for a great meal.

ShawRez, I hope you're right! (Though I have to take issue with any description of Duplex food as "great"). :)

haha... well duplex's broccolini salad rocks my world. While I never stray from that entree, I know others salivate over the meatloaf. Add a round of tater tots or pigs in blanket and you've got yourself some good eats.

But it probably wont win a James Beard anytime soon...

I saw "9th and U" and "Bodo's Bagels" in the same sentence and nearly fell out of my chair. I'm hoping somebody looking to open a food joint gets wise to the fact that a great bagel place like Bodo's in town is severely missing and would make a mint.

As for Nellie's, as long as they put the footie on the teli, and make the patio nice, I'm there.

ML - agreed re: the bagel joint need (and sorry I inadvertently got your hopes up!). On 9th Street, I'm thinking the vacant take out joint across from Azi's or the old pizza place next to the NPS's Carter Woodson properties would be great locations for a bagel place. Both offer outside seating, are on the right side of the road for downtown-headed a.m. traffic, are a short walk for Logan-ites, generally offer ample street parking, etc.

there was NO better place to watch the Nationals vs Mets this past weekend- adorable and sweet staff- yummy yummy empanadas...and the cilantro mayo sauce for dipping whatever you want in was double YUM! As a crazy sports fan, I detest the large sports bars - and I absolutely love the diversity of the soccer crowds, the chess playing crowds, and the little pockets of neighborhood folks trying it out, a patio area full of hotties there to enjoy cocktails, and of course, had the METS won...I would have had a perfect night!
