Weekend Shoutouts

Where did the week go? Here are a few ideas for good times in and around Shaw this weekend:

1. Mid-City Artists Open Studios – Stroll to see some neat and diverse local art in and around our neighborhood this Saturday and Sunday as Mid-City Artists hosts its Open Studios event. Check out the map for participating artists’ studios here (.pdf link), and samples of the artists’ works here.

Here are a few of open studios close to central Shaw:

Mike Weber - Painting
1836 9th Street, NW
Saturday 12-4pm

Chuck Baxter - Found Object Art
914 Westminster Street, NW
Saturday & Sunday 12-5pm

Kelly Towles – Painting
1643 13th Street, NW, #1
Saturday 12-5pm & Sunday 12-4pm

Marina Reiter - Painting
2120 Vermont Avenue, NW, #405
Saturday 12-5pm

2. The Great Big International Drag King Show on Saturday – As reported by Washingtonian, “Burlesque, music, dancing, and general gender-bending performances take place tonight at the 9:30 Club with the Great Big International Drag King Show. The avant-garde performance troupe does drag and queer entertainment better than anybody.” More details here.

9:30 Club
815 V Street, NW
$25; doors open at 8 pm

3. Go on the Shaw Architectural Treasure Hunt – The Shaw Architectural Treasure Hunt, taking place in conjunction with National Preservation Month, takes you around Shaw's commercial streets and challenges you to identify by address buildings represented by clues on the Treasure Hunt Form (available here or at various locations around Shaw listed here). Return the form to one of the locations listed on the form in order to be entered in a drawing for prizes donated by neighborhood businesses. Every participant will receive a full color poster featuring vividly color enhanced images of Shaw's architectural gems.

4. The Usual Highlights of a Weekend in Shaw – These regular weekend options are always great: the Liberation Dance Party at DC9, the shows at 9:30 Club, Black Cat, Arena Stage, and Studio Theater, the cultural offerings of the Warehouse Arts Complex, Project 4 Gallery, the Ninth Street Gallery, and the Long View Gallery, and the chance to get your freak on and knock back some drinks at places like Avenue, Be Bar, and Old Dominion Brewhouse.

We spent over 5 hours on Saturday and 2 hours on Sunday walking the streets of Shaw doing the architecture treasure hunt. We got all but 5 and we're still missing the most obvious one -- the lions! I can't believe we can't find it. Is it really in Shaw?
