Construction at Veranda, the new Mediterranean restaurant coming to the corner of 11th and P Streets, seems to have picked up significantly this past week. This morning I noticed several banners hanging outside the space announcing that the restaurant is "coming soon" (see above photo), as well as numerous construction trucks along the block. I peeked inside an open door to see that a lot of the drywall is up, and the industrial hoods in the kitchen have been installed. I can't wait to meet neighbors here for a coffee, a mezze, a tapa, a beer or an ouzo.
It's exciting that our dining options are increasing so quickly! Check out this interesting article about how restaurants typically drive neighborhood revitalization.

Nothing specific to Veranda - although I'm glad to see more progress in the neighborhood...
Just wanted to say I appreciate your blog and enjoy reading your positive take on things! I really do think focusing on the positives will help to change our neighborhood for the better in the long run...
Keep up the good work and THANKS again...
thanks, Anon!
There seems to be some positive feelings in the air about the direction our neighborhood is taking, and frankly it is very refreshing. I'm glad to see that Veranda is making progress quickly and am also looking forward to dining there. I hope the developments with the Shilo properties result in some growth as well.
I also wanted to mention that it seems that the DCFD got a little push from the WaPo article on broken hydrants this morning. They were out and about the neighborhood testing hydrants and I was happy to see many of them worked well.
Thanks you for your blog.
cant wait for this place to open!
oh in related DCFD news, our excellent NSC Joe Martin got them to put lights on the fire station on the 1300 block of NJ Ave NW. between that and The NJ-O Park it was a completely dark block, still waiting for park lights...
Great news, Si--congrats to you and the many folks who have been seeking this needed lighting for so long.
