Weekend Shoutouts

There’s a lot to do in Shaw this weekend; here are just a few options:

1. Get a Glimpse of Oprah! - Oprah will be speaking at the Howard commencement. Details here.

2. Project 4 Opening Saturday – Project 4’s latest show, Navigable Zones, opens this weekend. Check out details here. There will be an artist talk tomorrow (Saturday, May 12) at 5:30, followed by an opening reception from 6pm to 8:30.

Project 4
903 U Street, NW
202.232.4340

3. Experience Experiential Art Saturday - "Underwater", an experimental art show at 1520 14th Street, NW, is tomorrow night. It's being offered by Project Seduce & Destroy, a collective of creative artists featured in the show. The event will let you "experience the intimate otherworld of organic electronica sound and visual art at live." Go here to RSVP.

4. Weekends in Shaw Are Always Fun - These regular weekend options are always great: the Liberation Dance Party at DC9, the shows at 9:30 Club, Black Cat, Arena Stage, and Studio Theater, the cultural offerings of the Warehouse Arts Complex, Project 4 Gallery, the Ninth Street Gallery, and the Long View Gallery, and the chance to get your freak on and knock back some drinks at places like Avenue, Be Bar, and Old Dominion Brewhouse.

D'oh.... I had a whole mothers day post lined up (that I'd forgotten about... sorry mom!) and can't find it now?!? Thanks for the reminder, Si.

Here are some Mother's day brunch options:

1. Acadiana (which notably now features Sunday hours!).
2. Coeur de Lion in the Henley Park Hotel
3. Vegetate (mom would surely love their Pink Mimosas or Homemade Spicy Bloody Marys!)

D'oh Part 2: I forgot to mention that Long View Gallery opens its new exhibition of oil paintings by Alan Rubin (an exhibition entitled "Suspended Animation") this weekend also. Join them Saturday, May 12 from 6-8pm for the Artist Reception. The gallery is located at 1302 9th St NW.

Capitol Hill candlelight house tour was splendid with wonderful gardens -- far more restrained and refined than Logan, much less Dupont but still creative. Continues through today, Sunday, and includes Mother's Day Tea at Christ Church (620 G, SE) and guided tours of Congressional Cemetery (cenotaphs, Hoover-Tolson, Sousa and others). Makes you realize what a dangerous defaced dump Shaw is.

"Makes you realize what a dangerous defaced dump Shaw is."

While there is no doubt much truth to this statement, the negativity is pretty depressing. A real downer.

I think there are a lot of positive things and people contributing to Shaw's well being. While there is a lot to be brutally honest about, we shouldn't focus on the negative or else we'll lose our momentum and our passion. I don't think our reality is depressing. Instead, it holds a lot of promise.

As for the negative, the blogs and others are helping shed light on our need for increased police presence, improved infrastructure, and less old school politic-ing. It's a new day in Shaw, and I feel the area buzzing with hope.

Thank you, anon @ 3pm. While honesty is a requirement for dealing with problems effectively, just throwing around negative generalizations is not helpful. Let's focus on all of the positives in this community - we do have momentum now more than ever.
