I wish the developer would do something a little more with the outside of this property - decoratively speaking. I think the building would be more appealing painted with lanterns and landscaping...

I have only glanced at the place when walking by; I'll take a closer look next time I'm in the area. I imagine the developer would be amenable to adding accents--like new lanterns.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this...maybe it's been a while since I've seen it, and things have been added...it's just that, at these price points, the details matter...the units look beautiful, but the outside should match the quality and style... i think the brick should be painted b/c it's not an attractive shade - very drab and kind of depressing, in my humble opinion...

anon you read my mind. I passed there yesterday and there is the lamest attempt at landscaping - a couple parched azaeleas and half dead things. the byuilding is attractive enough but very beige. It would take a little effort to spruce it up.

but on a very happy note, a few doors over on the same block i saw a very sweet couple having dinner & wine right in front of their house on a tiny table & chairs basicly on the sidewalk. That was good stooping.

Hey ShawRez, a quick search on Long and Foster shows that the Modern Liquors building (and business) are for sale at 1200 9th Street...interesting!

Paint the brick?!?

Are you MAD!

People who do that are cheap and have no vision of how to bring out the intrinsic details in a building.

Never ever paint a brick building that has never had paint on it.

...but what if the brick is unattractive? some brick is nice, while other brick is not so nice...

in a historic district it is illegal to paint unpainted brick. the beige could look very groovy if the windows were done in a nice contrast like ...raspberry! ok maroon.

btw anon, the modern liquors building is a condo with 4 units.

You are right, Si! My bad - apparently, it is the retail condo that is for sale...for $1.1M, plus 500K for the business......

I went to an open house at the 936 N Street condos yesterday. I was really impressed with the development--the finishes are all really nice, the units have really great layouts, they don't have the standard D.C. condo feel to them, they are full of light (windows in just about every room), some feature awesome roof decks and views of Blagden Alley, and so on and so forth.

I actually kinda like the front facade, beige on beige though it may be. A newly installed awning over the front entrance provides some contrast in color and a modern accent. There are lanterns on either side of the front stairs (were they there when you saw it, anon @ 11:18?). As for the landscaping, there is room for improvement, but I think that's easily solved--I bet the developer would gladly do that ASAP if asked. I want to put a service request in to the DC gov to fix the sidewalk out front, which would also enhance the curb appeal.

Thanks very much for the update, ShawRez! Glad to hear about the lanterns - to answer your question, they weren't there last I looked... a great addition, to be sure....

Kudos for your sidewalk request! Sounds like it will really help the look of things when fixed....

On another note, I remember when the building was listed for sale about 5 years ago (then a shell, of course) for around $900k...
