Azi's Cafe wins hands down, followed by Old Dominion Brewery. Why aren't they on the list?

Ray - I believe Azi's opened in 2005 and subsequently won the best new business of 2005 award last year (I *think* that Vegetate was runner up).

Old Dominion opened in January of this year, so likewise isn't qualified for the award for best new business of 2006.

Azi's did win in 2005; my awareness of "Best New Shaw Business" came from the sign in their window.

Old Dominion is nothing more than a sports bar trading on microbrew cache. And besides, it's Virginia based...let's applaud our homegrown entrepreneurs!

Old Dominion Brewhouse isn't owned by the Virginia-based brewing company. I met the owners about a month ago, and they're really great people who have added a new element to our neihgborhood (with substantial personal investment/risk). Regardless, they aren't in the running for Best New Business of 2006.

I popped into Old Dom for a couple of beers yesterday for the 1st day of the tourney. It is a cool place and one of those predictable places. I do like it in the neighborhood. But I'm afraid of the extremes I'm seeing. Old Dom is that suburb style of place, Vegetate is a niche audience - where are the cool indie stores/restaurants/bars that cater to the basic city person. Personally I'd like to see Shaw develop more like the lower east side of NYC then DC's Chinatown. And I think it is going to take some more stylish/indie places to make that happen.
