My parents are going to be in town this weekend checking out my new house and the Shaw neighborhood for the first time, so I take great pleasure in calling your attention to these neat options in and around our neighborhood:
1. Neighborhood Happy Hour Tonight (Feb. 2) - from 6:00 to 8:00pm at The Old Dominion Brewhouse, this happy hour will give us all an informal setting to mingle and to discuss ideas/complaints in anticipation of the ANC meeting next week and before commissioner Chapple's open meeting the following week.

Old Dominion Brewhouse
1219 9th Street
6:00-8:00pm Friday
$3 draft beers plus other specials
2. H Street Community Market Fundraiser at Vegetate on Saturday Night - Vegetate will be closed to the public on Saturday night to host a fundraiser for the H Street Community Market, an organization that is part of a grassroots effort across the country to open food cooperatives* that carry food from local producers and small farmers. Tickets to the event are $40 for members, $50 for non-members and $100 for Market enthusiasts. You must rsvp to attend the event by sending an email to hstrsvp@yahoo.com.
*A cooperative is a business structure where the customers are owners, thus allowing for control and profits to remain within the community. The H Street Community Market aims to provide the community with fresh, locally grown, organic food at affordable prices. I hope they succeed at bringing such a store to D.C.

3. A Walkabout - As has been suggested on one of the neighborhood listserves, we need more good citizens out walking the streets of our neighborhood. More foot traffic on our sidewalks provides for fewer scary, lonely walks by others and is a good show of resilience in light of recent unpleasantness. But be safe about it--grab a pal or two before hitting the pavement. A walk too boring by itself? Check out the Shaw Heritage Trail while out and about so you can be an ambassador for our great neighborhood.
4. The Usual Fun Stuff in and around Shaw - Check out the Liberation Dance Party at DC9, the shows at 9:30 Club, Black Cat, Arena Stage, and Studio Theater, the cultural offerings of the Warehouse Arts Complex, Project 4 Gallery, the Ninth Street Gallery, and the Long View Gallery, and the chance to get your freak on and knock back some drinks at places like Avenue and Be Bar.
Do you know of an event I should feature in my Weekend Shoutouts? Email me at slumhistorique@yahoo.com!

Just curious, how was the neighborhood happy hour?
It was great! about 40 people showed up.
Thanks, Si--glad to hear it went well.
I HATE that I missed it and hope such gatherings can be regular events... My parents arrived Friday afternoon, AND our new puppy (we rescued a 10 week old boxer mix) arrived on Friday also, so I had to bail due to other commitments...
