Flower Power - Tulip Planting This Sunday

Back in 2009, Frank Asher of Old City Green and I got together to organize the first Shaw Main Streets tulip planting on 9th Street. It’s been such a pleasure to see the blocks in bloom each spring since, and the plantings have proven to be fun community efforts.

This Sunday (October 30, 2011) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. will be the third annual tulip planting on 9th Street. And this year is our most ambitious bulb planting yet -- we're planting thousands of tulips in tree boxes in the 1300 to 1900 blocks of 9th Street, NW (we're also weeding, mulching and putting down chicken wire to protect the bulbs from squirrels), with a heavy focus on boxes north of Rhode Island Avenue (which have never been the subject of our plantings).

To carry out this year’s project, we need help! If you’d like to make Shaw bloom for years to come, then plan on meeting up with neighbors and business owners at Old City Green (902 N Street, NW) at 10 a.m. to get started (late comers welcome too...). Bring your own gloves and tools; bulbs, other supplies and refreshments will be provided.

We are also in need of financial sponsors for the event. $55 covers the cost of the bulbs, soil and mulch for 1 box.

Contact me (renewshaw@gmail.com) for more information or to make a donation to the event.

Jefferson Apartment Group Buys Kelsey Gardens!

I've heard rumors about an impending sale of the old Kelsey Gardens Apartment complex in the 1500 block of Seventh Street for quite some time, and it now appears that a sale indeed occurred!

Multi-Housing News Online reported on October 17 that Jefferson Apartment Group ("JAG") purchased the site from Metropolitan Development, LLC (which was represented by MAC Realty Advisors, LLC (MAC)).  JAG will redevelop the property into Jefferson Square, a 281-unit, urban infill, transit-oriented project.

This is great news for all who want to see this block of Seventh transformed into something great.  JAG has the experience and capability to deliver a first class product.

Halloween Party at 1905 Saturday

1905's Halloween party has become a great tradition in the neighborhood: it never gets too crazy packed, and it's always a lot of fun. It's a great destination unto itself, or it's a great stop along the way to other parties in the area.

This year's party is this Saturday (October 29th).  Those in costume will be privy to drink specials, and those not in costume will have to beg Joel to extend them the discounts. Drink specials start at 10 p.m. (details TBD, but I'm sure will be great), but all are welcome earlier.

Speaking of 1905, they have some great new items on the menu.  I had the duck entree last Friday night and found it to be killer -- and the rye-bread-pudding-goodness that accompanies it is pretty spectacular.

Long View Gallery Presents Clyde Fowler

Tonight from 6:30 to 8:30, Long View Gallery celebrates the opening of its latest show, an exhibition of works by North Carolina-based artist Clyde Fowler. Fowler was the long-time director the visual arts program at the North Carolina School of the Arts, and his show will be on display through November 6, 2011.

Fowler describes his paintings as 'pictorial choreography'. He approaches his work in a manner similar to that of a choreographer, filling them with orchestrated sensations and intuitive notations while giving consideration to movement, rhythm, space and form. His art explores the associative nature of visual relationships and the dynamic potential of juxtaposition involving a language that is purely abstract. Although Fowler's imagery can reference personal experience and a range of artistic influences, especially the staged tableaux of theatrical director and designer Robert Wilson, he begins with no preconceived message or set direction. Instead, Fowler allows the paintings to develop according to the added strokes, shapes and colors while constantly revising aesthetic decisions during that process.
