Courtyard by Marriott, Residence Inn Slated for 9th and L
The Washington Business Journal reports that Marriott plans to build a Courtyard by Marriott and a Residence Inn, as well as some lively retail, on the property it's amassed at 9th and L Streets, NW. This land was originally acquired to be part of the convention center hotel, which will now be confined to the block bounded by 9th, 10th, Mass and L and which is slated to open in 2012.

i wonder if marriott is paying vacant property tax.
good to see you back Shaw Rez...
nooooo.. not another crappy mainstream hotel!
I realize we're not on par with the likes of the west-end yet. However, I can't help but feel like our neighborhood should have a little more cache when it comes to high end establishments. After all, isn't that more in line with the downtown demographic?
I realize that the convention center warrant these kinds of places but I'm still entitled to be less than happy about it!
(When is Ian Schrager coming to DC?)
I was definitely routing for the new, edgy Marriott boutique brand "Edition" to occupy one of the spots at 9th and L, but Courtyard and Residence Inn do make some sense for the convention-going crowd and for the numerous offices being built nearby. In addition to the boutique hotel component to the O Street Market development, I predict other boutique hotels will pop up nearby. Douglas Jemal has hinted to such in his holdings along 7th Street.
Don't dis the Residence Inn! I love that place. Free breakfast AND your own kitchen? Heaven! :) Seriously, I always try to stay at a Residence Inn wherever I go.
At least it's not a flop-house-like chain. These are more for business travelers, which is a good thing.
There is a really cool new Boutique Hotel called the Donovan House opening at 14 and Thomas Circle in the Holiday Inn. Brought to you by the uber-cool Thompson Hotel group. It's not Shaw but close enough.
Dear anonymous, thanks for alerting me to this amazing development. My favorite hotel by far is 60 thompson. I hope this ends up being just as amazing.
YAY!
Metrocurean pointed me to the following link which provides the rumor that the D.C. Edition hotel will be at 18th and Euclid in an old church!
