Weekend Shoutouts

Here are just a few suggestions of things to do in and around Shaw this weekend:

1. Dine on U - We're lucky to be so close to all of the great nightlife and dining options on U Street. On suggested culinary treat from the vibrant corridor comes from this week's edition of Five Bites at the newly revamped Metrocurean: Mushrooms sautéed in truffle oil and topped with Manchego cheese at Creme. I've had them and am a believer... they're delicious.

2. Check out the New Show at Long View - Attend tomorrow night's opening or just stop by to see the awesome works by 6 artists of Weber Fine Art at Shaw's very own Long View Gallery.

3. These Regular Options Are Always Great - the Liberation Dance Party at DC9, the shows at 9:30 Club, Black Cat, Arena Stage, and Studio Theater, the cultural offerings of the Warehouse Arts Complex, Project 4 Gallery, the Ninth Street Gallery, and the Long View Gallery, the chance to get your freak on and knock back some drinks at places like Avenue, Be Bar, Nellie's Sports Bar, and Old Dominion Brewhouse, and great meals at Vegetate, Etete, or Queen of Sheba.

Have a weekend shoutout suggestion? Email me at slumhistorique at yahoo dot com or leave it in the comments!

This just in:

We still need more volunteers for tomorrow, Saturday October 20, at 10:00 a.m. Here's what's going on:

What: Vermont Avenue Garden Party
Help beautify the neighborhood by planting pansies for the Winter and perennials (ornamental grasses & day lilies) for the Spring to come. We'll also be applying much-needed mulch to help make the most of whatever moisture we might get this Fall.

As many of you know, this area, including the traffic "island" at Vermont, Florida and V Street, was an eyesore until the Spring of 2007, when community groups, businesses, property owners, government representatives, and residents joined forces to transform the triangle and 6 blocks of median into a lovely garden. Last month, folks came out to weed and clean the area. Now we need help to update the blooming flowers for fall and assure that the area will look just as great - even better! - next Spring.

Where: Vermont Avenue median from U Street to Florida Avenue
Meet in front of Duffy's (FL & V & VT)

When: Saturday October 20, from 10:00 a.m. until FREE LUNCH at Duffy's!!!

Who: People of all ages and abilities

A great opportunity to meet your neighbors and introduce children to the joys of gardening. The Vermont Avenue Garden project has been a truly inspiring community effort. We need continued support and broader involvement to make it a lasting success.

What to Bring: An assortment of tools will be provided, plus (I think) bottled water supplied by the 930 Club. But if you happen to have your own shovel or trowel and a pair of gloves, they might come in handy.

Hope to see you Saturday!
