Weekend Shoutouts

There's tons to do in and around Shaw this weekend, as always. Here are a few highlights:

1. Say Goodbye to A.V. Ristorante on or Before Saturday Night - The owners of the D.C. tradition A.V. Ristorante sold their property (read the story here) , which will soon be the site of a massive mixed use redevelopment by Douglas Development. The last supper is Saturday night; the place has been packed all week as folks have enjoyed one last meal at the quirky Italian joint, so be prepared to wait.

A.V. Ristorante Italiano
607 New York Ave. NW

2. Say Goodbye to the Bar and Cafe of Warehouse Sunday Night - Incredibly high property taxes are forcing the Warehouse Arts Complex to downsize its operations.* Pay your last respects to the bar and cafe at this Sunday night's closing shin-dig. Drink specials, Art in Heat, Fringe Performances, and mourners of this loss to lower 7th will abound. You can also hear the plans for and share your suggestions regarding future of the Warehouse. The fun starts at 7pm.

Warehouse Arts
1021 7th Street NW

*The Warehouse Theater and the Warehouse Gallery will open new shows in September. They will host a series of special events throughout the fall, so if you miss them on Sunday, don't despair.

3. Tennis, Anyone? - The tennis court at the Kennedy Recreation Center seems to be empty always. Why not challenge a neighbor/roommate/friend to a match?

4. There's Always This Fun Stuff To Do in Shaw - These regular weekend options are always great: the Liberation Dance Party at DC9, the shows at 9:30 Club, Black Cat, Arena Stage, and Studio Theater, the cultural offerings of the Warehouse Arts Complex, Project 4 Gallery, the Ninth Street Gallery, and the Long View Gallery, and the chance to get your freak on and knock back some drinks at places like Avenue, Be Bar, and Old Dominion Brewhouse.

Funny you mention the tennis court - I was just about to ask around to see where there is to play tennis around here. But is the Kennedy Rec Center safe to play at? Seriously, I'm asking.

(Before anyone attacks me/suggests I move to the suburbs - or maybe that just happens on our own Penn Quarter blogs - I have read/heard that the rec center is the "turf" of one of those gangs up there that shoot at one another. I would love to play tennis in Shaw, but not if I'm going to get in the middle of some showdown.)

Clara - your comment reminds me that I left off the Penn Quarter Happy Hour tonight, which you mentioned a few days ago (although not Shaw per se, it's worth a shoutout for such a great neighbor!) Here ar the details you provided:

Friday at UltraBar (9th & F) from 5 to 9 pm. It's a benefit for the nearby YWCA, and there will be door prizes, including gift certificates to restaurants like Rasika, Zaytinya and Oya.

Now re: your comment. Fair question for sure. I personally wouldn't feel unsafe playing tennis there. Others care to comment?

Thanks - I hope some of you guys can come! I think it'll be a fun happy hour. :)

I am tempted to say that the tennis court is not safe, so that it remains empty when I want to play...

But it is a really nice court. When I played this week there were families on the play equipment, kids playing basketball. A 8 year old did try to steal one of my tennis balls, but gave it back quickly when I saw him walking out with it. I wouldn't play tennis there at midnight, but then who needs to play tennis at midnight?

Time to add NELLIE's to your regular weekend line up of places to kick back and have a couple of drinks!!

Does anyone have a report from Nellie's? Is it a cool place to hang out?

How 'bout The Space?? Any word on how many memberships they have yet? Successful?? I'm very curious to see how this goes.....a bold business move, I think.

When does the Douglas Development construction actually start at the A.V. site? It will be sad seeing the place sit empty.......

Best way to describe NELLIE's (imo) is its a work in progress...have been twice...overall, my reaction is positive and the roof deck will be GREAT! Think it will be a fun place when they get their act together, but some kinks are to be expected with an independent new business I think...

The development of the block bounded by 6th, 7th, and L Streets and New York Avenue is years away. AV chose to close now. Douglas Development didn't kick them out.

Alex, thanks for your insight. Do you know what year this development is slated to start?

Does anyone know whether the Warehouse has had any success in finding another location? To lose the Warehouse would be a great loss for WDC.
