Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Neighborhood Library Construction Set to Begin Next Year?

In a press conference held yesterday, Chief Librarian Ginnie Cooper announced that construction of the new Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Neighborhood Library and three other branch libraries will begin next summer (read the full story of the press conference here). Architectural firms Davis Brody Bond Aedas and the Freelon Group Inc., in connection with R. McGhee and Associates, have been chosen to design and construct the libraries. According to the announced plan, the library will be open in 2010.

as long as it looks nothing like or uses material similar to the existing neighborhood library it's a good thing.

I loved the term used to describe this style of post-riot architecture: Brutalist. Obviously, security concerns went into its construction.

Go take a picture of it...hurry!

Looks like it was designed by the same person/group who did the old convention center.......brutalist, it fits. apparently, they weren't into incorporating any light into their design.

Those narrow window slits were intended, Anonymous, as crenelation to shield National Guardsmen and citizens evacuated here during he next riot from Molotov cocktails, gunfire and armed assault, not shed the light of learning upon the seething, huddled masses of Shaw. "Form folgt Funktion" (form follows function), the Bauhaus motto. Given the Police's inability to root out the escalating violence at Lincoln Westmoreland next door, we may come to miss our neighborhood bunker.

the site itself is an unusual shape that invites geometry, asbury dwellings is a great elegant curve and the metro canopy adds more excitment to the library site.

bunker or prison, that's the current library.

when is the 7 11 gunna go?
