Long View Gallery Presents Judith Thompson

Shaw's very own Long View Gallery hangs its newest monthly exhibition later this week. The show--which officially opens on Saturday with an artist reception from 6 to 8pm (mark your calendars!)--is entitled "Woman of Distinction" and features oil paintings by Judith Thompson. I can't wait to see her works in person!

As the Los Angeles Times has noted, "Thompson's imagery seems strangely familiar and modestly strange. More important than any social or emotional message to be gleaned here, her paintings charge the imagination and cloud the mind in a rewarding way." The women of distinction depicted in her paintings often appear very regal and find themselves surrounded by symbolic objects and creatures that they choose to ignore. Their attention is focused outside the canvas onto the viewer, begging one to question their world.

on an unrelated note, the Wash. Bus. Journal is reporting today that plans are set for the Old Convention Center site, and that the developer has "speed" on its mind....site described as "retail heavy".........

Thanks for the cite, anon! I hate the Wash Biz Journal's paid subscriber limitation on viewing articles online. I will track down a print edition in my office later today!

The redevelopment of the old convention center site will be huge in advancing Shaw's renewal momentum by filling in this large pedestrian gap between downtown and our neighborhood.
